Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant: An economic engine in the region

Updated: 6 days ago

Located on the coast of the state of Veracruz, facing the imposing Gulf of Mexico, the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant (CNLV) has established itself as a pillar of Mexico's energy infrastructure. With more than three decades of operation, this facility not only provides clean and safe electricity, but also boosts the economic development of the region, creating jobs and generating a positive impact on the local economy. In addition, its operation stands out for its low environmental impact, contributing significantly to the sustainability of the country.

History of the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant

Construction of the CNLV began in the 1970s, as part of a national effort to diversify energy sources. After years of work, Unit 1 entered commercial operation on July 24, 1990, and five years later, on April 10, 1995, Unit 2 also began operations. Both reactors use boiling water reactor (BWR) technology, one of the most reliable and safest in the global nuclear industry.

Since its inception, the CNLV has been instrumental in the country's electricity supply, generating approximately 5% of the total electricity Mexico consumes. This makes it an essential source of base energy, ensuring constant and stable generation, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Commitment to safety

Safety is a top priority at the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant. The plant's reactors are equipped with multiple protection systems, designed under the strictest international standards. These include physical barriers that isolate radioactive materials and automatic systems that stop the operation of the reactors in the event of any irregularities.

In addition, the plant is subject to constant supervision by the National Commission for Nuclear Safety and Safeguards (CNSNS) and is regularly evaluated by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). These audits ensure that plant operations continue to meet the highest safety standards globally. In addition, plant personnel receive ongoing training and participate in regular drills to ensure they are prepared for any contingency.

Economic and social impact in the region

In addition to its crucial role in electricity generation, the CNLV is an economic engine in the region. During its construction and operation, it has generated thousands of direct and indirect jobs, boosting the growth of the local economy. The plant's workers include engineers, technicians, operators and support staff, which has contributed to the formation of a highly skilled workforce in the area.

The economic spillover from the plant is not limited to the jobs within its facilities. Shops, hotels, restaurants and other local services have experienced sustained growth thanks to the economic activity generated by the plant and its staff. This indirect impact has boosted the regional economy, benefiting nearby communities and creating new business opportunities.

Clean energy and low environmental impact

One of the biggest benefits of nuclear power is its low environmental impact. Unlike plants that rely on fossil fuels, CNLV does not emit greenhouse gases or other pollutants during its operation. This makes it a key source for the decarbonization of the Mexican electricity system, contributing significantly to the country's efforts to reduce its carbon emissions and combat climate change.

In addition, the plant follows strict protocols for the management of radioactive waste, storing it safely and following international best practices. This ensures that environmental impacts are minimized throughout the operation's lifecycle.

I want to know the plant

As part of the post-congress activities, a guided tour of the Laguna Verde Nuclear Power Plant will be held. This visit will allow participants to see first-hand the key facilities of the plant, although the reactors will not be accessed for safety reasons. During the tour, attendees will be able to explore operational areas and visit the Information Center, where the most important aspects of the operation, security and economic impact of the CNLV in the region will be explained. It is a unique opportunity to learn more about the operation of this strategic facility and its role in Mexico's energy future.
